Day 20: Connect, reach out. But also, discuss what you wish.
Maybe it’s calling a friend or family member or asking your son or daughter about their day. Perhaps it’s having a conversation with the office chatterbox. The point is to connect, really get to the heart of where they are. But reciprocate! Often, many of us don’t share ourselves with others. Maybe it causes us to experience the negative emotions again, maybe we just don’t want to burden the other person. The point is, we’re not. Human beings are designed to connect with one another.
Listen to where the other person is coming from. Make sure you hear them out. But insist on sharing yourself as well. Holding back to the point where no one knows what’s really going on inside of you is no one’s fault but your own. This creates feelings of isolation, rejection, and loneliness. This is even more important in the quarantines imposed on us by the COVID pandemic.
For some of us, this is difficult. We were raised to think the no one cared what we thought or felt. Don’t let yourself be isolated. Connect, reach out. But also, discuss what you wish.
